Working together for green, competetive and inclusive Europe

New perspectives for Lithuanian companies towards more sustainable steps

Sustainability. Circular economy. Waste reduction. Eco-design. These common European values shape our society, although many still opt for less sustainable solutions. Consumers tend to do so because of financial reasons and businesses due to stubborn production habits.

Changes are urgently neededAlthough recently there has been a large number of initiatives in the field of waste recycling, worldwide statistics show that less than 1% of clothing and less than 40% of electronics are recycled, while more than20% of food is thrown out. The construction sector is considered to be the most waste-intensive –  about 35% of all EU waste is construction waste.

The rise in electricity prices is prompting a review of renewable energy opportunities. Looking at the National Energy Independence Strategy, it is expected that by 2050 In Lithuania, the share of renewable energy resources in electricity consumption will be 100%. In addition, when looking through the financial perks of it, more and more investment is being made and more innovative solutions are offered in this area.

By reducing pollution, the number of electric cars registered in Lithuania has doubled over the past year and continues to grow rapidly. Along with the increase, more incentives are planned to increase the charging infrastructure of electric vehicles, as complaints increase not only due to their small number, but also due to insufficient driving distance and charging efficiency.

Promoting green innovation is crucial for the transition to an environmentally friendly and non-toxic circular economy, reducing the impact of carbon dioxide on nature and simply eliminating waste.

Innovative projects selectedFollowing the evaluation of applications submitted under the call for proposals of the Norwegian Financial Mechanism Program “Business Development, Innovation and SMEs” in the field of Green Industry, investments in the development and implementation of innovations, environmentally friendly products / technologies will be granted to six Lithuanian companies and their bilateral projects. The selected projects focus on the development and implementation of advanced environmentally friendly products and technologies. The main goal of the program is to accelerate the growth of each project by helping to bring ideas from the laboratory to the market by providing the missing share of funding depending on the nature and scope of the project.

Among the selected project ideas are different areas for which modern solutions are offered. These include innovative systems in the fields of construction, waste management and maintenance, innovative electric vehicle charging stations, sound-insulating acoustic panels from recycled raw materials and DI technology that facilitates the use of secondary raw materials during the production process. The ideas developed by the projects offer the development of physical products aimed at reducing pollution, promoting sustainability both on national and international levels.

All projects are implemented with partners from Norway, as business partnerships between companies participating in the Program from the donor country and the recipient country are a key bilateral objective of the Program. Such collaboration is fueled by bringing together researchers, technologists, and manufacturers in projects to deliver new universal solutions to global challenges and strengthen their position in the field of innovation. The aim of such an advantageous partnership is to provide Lithuanian companies not only with knowledge, but also with the accumulated experience and good practice.

The Norway Grants program, administered by the Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA), promotes innovation in the green industry by providing financing opportunities to Lithuanian companies operating in this field and by introducing Norwegian companies developing green technologies.
